Project_RC - Hallway Renovation - Richmond
Project type
Commercial Office Corridor Renovation
Date
2026/1
Location
Richmond
This project involved the renovation of a common corridor within an existing commercial property.
The goal was not simply to replace aging finishes, but to redefine the role of the corridor within the overall interior. What was once purely a transitional passageway was transformed into a more intentional spatial experience defined by rhythm, depth, and visual identity.
✨ Design Challenges
The existing corridor presented several key challenges:
🔺 Limited material variation across the walls and flooring resulted in a flat, visually monotonous environment.
🔺 Existing lighting provided basic functionality but lacked atmosphere, hierarchy, and visual focus.
🔺 The long, narrow proportions made the corridor feel enclosed and visually restrictive.
The challenge was to improve the overall experience and quality of the space without making significant structural changes.
🔎 Design Strategy
🔵 Reworking the Flooring
Modular carpet tiles in layered grey tones were arranged in a geometric pattern to introduce rhythm and movement along the linear circulation path.
In addition to adding visual interest, the modular system provides durability and greater flexibility for future maintenance and replacement—an important consideration in high-traffic commercial environments.
🔵 Redefining Wall Proportions
Vertical wood slat detailing was introduced to visually emphasize height and reduce the enclosed feeling of the corridor.
The warm wood texture also softens the surrounding finishes, bringing a more welcoming and refined quality to the otherwise minimalist space.
🔵 Creating Layers of Light
Lighting was treated as more than a functional requirement—it became an integral part of the spatial design.
Vertical wall sconces reinforce the rhythm of the corridor, while strategically placed crystal pendant fixtures create visual focal points and help guide movement through the space.
Together, these layers of illumination create a more dynamic and engaging experience.
💡 Design Highlights
📌 Modular carpet tile installation
📌 Vertical wood slat wall detailing
📌 Atmosphere-driven layered lighting
📌 Elevated finishes for the commercial common area
📍 The Final Transformation
The renovated corridor maintains its original functionality while significantly improving its brightness, visual proportions, material depth, and overall atmosphere.
Rather than serving only as a passage between spaces, the corridor has become a memorable part of the commercial environment itself.
Through thoughtful material selection, architectural detailing, and layered lighting, the renovation establishes a cohesive and refined design language that enhances the experience of the entire property.
