Older Home Renovation | Rebuilding Space Through Thoughtful Simplification
This older home renovation began with a simple principle: sometimes transforming a space starts with removing what no longer serves it.
By eliminating visually heavy elements, simplifying materials, and reconsidering circulation, we created a home that feels brighter, more open, and better connected.
01 | Living Room & Fireplace — Opening Up the Space
The original bulky fireplace and surrounding structure were removed, allowing the living room to be rebuilt around a clean white architectural backdrop.
Removing these visually heavy elements restored the sightlines through the space and immediately created a greater sense of openness.
The white palette is more than an aesthetic choice—it helps reduce visual weight, reflect natural light, and make the room feel larger and brighter.
02 | Hallway — From Obstruction to Seamless Flow
The original cabinetry occupying valuable hallway space was removed and replaced with floor-to-ceiling white built-in storage, paired with light oak flooring.
By extending the cabinetry vertically and integrating it visually with the walls, generous storage is maintained without making the hallway feel crowded.
Light oak flooring softens the transition between spaces and creates a more natural, continuous flow throughout the home.
03 | Kitchen — Bringing Light Back into the Space
The original dark cabinetry was removed and replaced with crisp white cabinetry and minimalist hardware.
By simplifying both the materials and colour palette, natural and artificial light can move more freely throughout the kitchen.
Instead of being visually dominated by heavy finishes, the renovated kitchen feels bright, open, clean, and designed around everyday functionality.
04 | Bathroom — Refined Material Contrast
The outdated shower base was removed and replaced with white marble-look surfaces, creating a cleaner and more contemporary foundation.
Matte black fixtures provide a strong yet controlled contrast, adding definition to the otherwise light and minimal palette.
The result is a bathroom that feels modern and streamlined without sacrificing warmth or character.
05 | Flooring & Walls — Resetting the Visual Balance
The original dark flooring was replaced with light oak flooring, reducing visual weight and creating a stronger sense of openness throughout the home.
Walls were also refreshed with a consistent light-toned palette, allowing natural light to reflect more effectively and visually connect each room.
✨ The Value of Thoughtful Renovation
A successful renovation is not defined by how many materials or decorative elements are added.
It comes from carefully balancing proportion, circulation, light, materials, and visual consistency.
By removing what made the original home feel heavy and introducing a more cohesive design language, this renovation allows the architecture—and everyday life within it—to feel more open, comfortable, and effortless.
